Continuing Education

I’ve been interviewing for network administrator positions but one of my weaknesses is server administration. So recently I purchased a Microsoft course for basic server administration (MTA 98-365) and today I took the exam, and passed.

This means I now have both Cisco and Microsoft certifications, making me that little bit more competitive when I interview or apply for positions. How much did this cost? The exam was $125 and the course material was free. I did snag a cheap computer off Ebay for lab work, but I’m not counting that at this time as the computer will be used for further education.

I’m lucky that IT is driven by certifications and not by degrees. Certifications are much faster and cheaper to achieve, at least at the lower levels. I hate to think how much a Cisco CCIE costs!
